AI-Generated Doesn't Mean There's No Copyright
A film, a drama series, or a single episode can contain AI-generated footage and still contain copyrightable human authorship. The two are not in opposition, and U.S. Copyright Office guidance treats them as separable parts of the same work.
An AI-assisted drama is an audiovisual work like any other: the premise, the characters, the written dialogue and the edit can be yours even when individual shots were generated.
What matters is which parts came from a person. The difficulty is evidence: most production tools overwrite as you work, so by the time the question is asked, all that remains is the finished file.

Can an AI-generated drama be copyrighted?
A drama series made with AI tools is treated like any other audiovisual work: copyright protects the human authorship in it, not the material a model produced on its own. In a series that usually means the story concept, the premise, the characters, the arc, the written dialogue and the editorial choices about what to keep. Those human contributions can be protected even when individual shots were generated.
Can an AI-generated film be copyrighted?
The same answer applies. U.S. copyright protects human authorship, and the Copyright Office has said repeatedly that material generated autonomously by an AI system, with no human author, is not eligible for copyright — a position the D.C. Circuit affirmed in Thaler v. Perlmutter in 2025. A film made with AI tools is not excluded from copyright; protection attaches to its human-authored parts rather than to the machine-generated material by itself.

Can AI-generated videos be copyrighted?
A video generated purely from a prompt, with no further human creative input, is generally not protected on its own under current Copyright Office guidance. A video a person shaped — wrote, directed, re-cut, sequenced, scored — contains human authorship that can be. The question is never the tool; it is how much of the finished work came from a person.

Can individual episodes of a drama series have copyright?
Yes, in the sense that an episode is its own audiovisual work and can carry its own human authorship — its outline, script, revisions, scene direction, take selection and edit. Series-level material such as the premise, the characters and the arc sits alongside it. That is why a provenance record is worth keeping at both levels rather than only for the finished series.
What counts as human authorship in an AI-assisted production?
Creative choices a person actually makes that are perceptible in the finished work: writing, revising, deciding what to keep and what to cut, directing a scene, arranging shots into a sequence, timing. In Part 2 of its report on copyright and artificial intelligence, published in January 2025, the Copyright Office concluded that prompts alone generally do not give a person enough control over an output to make that output copyrightable, while human-authored material perceptible in the result, and creative selection, arrangement and modification, can be protected.

What if my script was generated by AI but I edited it?
Your edits are the part that matters. A model's raw output is not protected by human authorship, but what you wrote, rewrote, restructured or cut is your own creative expression, and the Copyright Office's registration guidance contemplates exactly this mixed case — human authorship in a work that also contains AI-generated material. In practice the difficulty is evidential: unless the revisions were recorded as you made them, the finished script no longer shows which lines were yours.
What if some of my footage is AI-generated?
A work can contain both. Under the March 2023 registration guidance, a work containing AI-generated material is registrable to the extent it also contains human authorship, and the AI-generated portions have to be disclosed and disclaimed on the application. Generated footage sitting inside a human-written, human-directed and human-edited episode does not remove the authorship in everything around it.
How can I document my creative contributions?
Keep a record of the creative work as it happens: what you wrote, what you changed, what you chose, and when. The practical difficulty is that most production tools overwrite instead of recording, so by the time anyone asks, the evidence of the process is gone and only the finished file remains. That gap is what Squall Studio is building for.
Does Squall Studio register my copyright?
No. We are not a law firm, we do not give legal advice, and we do not file anything with the U.S. Copyright Office or any other registry. What we are building is a record of your creative process that you can keep, export, and use however you and your own attorney decide. The Copyright Office and the courts decide copyright questions; a provenance record is documentation, not a determination.
